| LA TIMES: ROSEANNE GETS NEW RADIO SHOW |
[07 Jan 2009|10:04pm] |

Roseanne on the radio
Acerbic actress and comedian Roseanne Barr premieres an hourlong radio show today on the left-leaning KPFK-FM (90.7), in which she and partner Johnny Argent will take listener calls, interview guests and discuss politics and other issues.
Barr and Argent will take over the Wednesday edition of the station's "Beneath the Surface" program, which airs at 5 p.m. weekdays. KPFK invited the pair back after they held forth on election day, a program that featured fewer wisecracks about Sarah Palin or William Ayres than about Barr's earnest hope and anxiety over the election results and her rapport with callers. KPFK said their stint on "Beneath the Surface" will run at least through spring.

CNN Confirms that what the Obama campaign says about McCain and the Keating 5 is true.
A wonderful to-the-point clip by CNN -- a must watch! And something worthwhile to spread around.
McCain had a direct role in the savings and lone crisis of the late 80s that cost taxpayers a ton of money, and he had a significant role in the economic crisis we see now. Deja Vu I tell you!

"Team Obama is an ideologically diverse group including policy veterans such as Paul Volcker, Robert Rubin and Lawrence Summers — people who served Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton at the Federal Reserve, Treasury Department and White House. "A very reassuring team," says Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.
Team McCain is more professionally eclectic, reaching beyond Washington to Silicon Valley entrepreneurs who have run companies such as Hewlett-Packard and eBay. It trumpets low taxes and — at least until now — less regulation. "It's Reagan Republicanism," says Grover Norquist, president of the anti-tax group Americans for Tax Reform.
Source: http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/election2008/2008-09-18-econteams_N.htm"
The main difference between the teams? McCain's group of advisers are people who are involved in big business and helped deregulate the governments role with business. This mindset --Reagan Republicanism-- is what lead to the economic problems we see now. This deregulation that McCain supported for 26-years, allowed business to make risky decisions for profit. But these risky decisions are now costing the American people big time economically. If the government was allowed to regulate business, as Obama supports, none of this would be happening.
"I'm always for deregulation" - John McCain
Furthermore, McCain's tax-cuts are the Bush tax-cuts. Supposedly everyone gets a tax-cut under his plan, but it mostly goes towards the wealthy. This is called "trickle down economics". This belief is that if we give more to the rich, it will somehow trickle down to the rest of us. Yeahhh, right!
Obama's plan will not cut taxes for the rich, but will cut taxes to a larger degree for the rest of Americans. Obama believes in helping our country from the bottom up, not the top down. It's more important to help those who are struggling, than give more to those who are doing just fine. Obama's tax-cuts benefit the middle-class, which will boost our economy.

| McCain campaign plummeting |
[18 Sep 2008|01:16am] |
Let's recap over the last week:
Awwww, boo-hoo, McCain was grilled by 3 women on The View. They actually asked the questions journalists won't ask! And people say the media is liberal! HA! If McCain can't deal with them, how will he be able to deal with the leaders of Iran?
1. McCain was exposed on his lying and or misleading ads. One was about teaching sex education to kindergartners, which was really about protecting kindergartners from sexual predators. Another was about Obama calling Sarah Palin a "pig". Not true. They are both lies.
2. McCain was proven wrong on his statement that Sarah Palin did not take earmarks as Governor.
Sarah Palin took earmarks. Even if she "cut" earmarks for Alaska, that wasn't McCain's claim. He denied that she took any earmarks as Governor, PERIOD. Yet it's proven she asked for over 300 million dollars in earmarks. McCain is a liar. If you are going to run on being anti-earmarks, you better get your facts straight!
3. Palin says Alaska produces 20% of America's energy. Nope, only 3%. Lies again.
4. Sarah Palin never told Congress "no thanks" to that "bridge to nowhere". She originally supported it and was only against it AFTER Congress killed the project. She gets no credit and is a lying flip-flopper.
5. Sarah Palin never went to Iraq, she only reached the border. And she was only in Ireland for a refueling stop. Lies by the McCain camp again!
6. John McCain was so confused by Palin's "e-bay" story that he said Sarah Palin sold the plane on e-bay. That's not true. Palin mislead us to the point where even John McCain thought she had sold the plane on e-bay! What a joke!
7. The McCain campaign also says Obama will raise taxes, when independent sources say he will cut taxes for 95% of Americans. And Obama will cut taxes MORE than McCain will for those making under 250,000 dollars (95% of Americans). McCain's tax cuts will hardly give any money to those making under 250,000 dollars. He'll give most of his tax cuts to the top 5% of Americans and those who ship jobs overseas.
Obama = tax cuts for 95% of Americans at a higher rate than McCain. McCain = tax cuts for everyone. But at a lower rate for 95% of Americans and at a really high rate for the 5% making above 250,000.
8. Now Sarah Palin won't corporate with the investigation that is looking into her abuse of power. They claim the investigation is "tainted". I thought Republicans hated conspiracy theories? This whole thing reeks of GUILT. They realize she's guilty and want to postpone the investigation until after the election because she's guilty. That's the real reason. It has nothing to do with the investigation being "tainted".
The bottom line is, what else can the McCain camp lie about!?!?!?!?!? Yes, Obama stretches the truth -- but he doesn't outright lie and make his lies the central theme of his campaign like McCain does.
I thought McCain said he would never run a dishonorable campaign to win. I guess he puts winning over our country, as shown by his campaign and choice for Vice President. Oh wait! Sarah Palin can see Russia from some parts of Alaska! She must be experienced.
PS: Sarah Palin's second interview was with Sean Hannity. Yeah, that counts. And the first interview she looked like a college kid cramming for an exam. She repeated the same Bush-talking points over and over (WE MUST NEVER QUESTION ISRAEL. WE MUST NEVER QUESTION ISRAEL. WE MUST NEVER QUESTION ISRAEL.) and showed no knowledge or depth over the issues. If she can't face our "mean, sexist, liberal" media, how will she face the leaders of the Middle East?
God help our country!
And now with McCain coming out saying the "fundamentals of the economy are strong" is just plain scary. Of course he came out and "clarified" his comment, but we know what he meant. He's said that same thing over 16 times! He's just out-of-touch. But wait, he invented the blackberry!

McCain FLIP-FLOPS on regulation -- HUGE, HUGE issue For 26 years John McCain has been for deregulating Washington's role in business. He believes the government has no business in the world of business.
Guess what caused the crash on wall-street? The deregulation John McCain has supported for year. Because the government did not have enough control over businesses, they took advantage by partaking in risky business deals. They invested in insurance they couldn't pay for and now the government has to bail them out.
John McCain yesterday did not think the government should bail out AIG. If we had listened to John McCain this would have been catastrophic for our economy. Thankfully, the government (who the Republicans hate) bailed out AIG. It seems the government does have a role in the world of business.
Who do you think regulates our food? Who do you think regulates our infrastructure? The government. The only reason the Republicans hate the government regulating business is because it prevents them from excessive profits. How do businesses get these excessive profits? By making risky business deals that may or may not pay off. Guess what? These risky business deals did not pay off. Now look at wall-street and our economy.
We need the government to regulate businesses so they do not take risky deals that put our country at risk. The irony is that if the government had been regulating businesses, the government would not need to now bail them out. Funny how the anti-government businesses now need the government's assistance.
After 26 years of supporting deregulation, McCain now supports regulation. I think the American people know who the true John McCain is. He, like the Republicans, prefer greed over the American people.
Vote regulation. Vote for our economy. Vote Obama.

Palin says most VP candidates have not met foreign leaders??
Except for Cheney, Gore, Bush, Mondale, Ford and Rockefeller. If she goes back a few decades, she may have a point.
Is this lady insane?
"Ms. Palin saw fit to increase her foreign affairs experience by adding Iraq and Ireland to the countries she has visited. Problem is, she didn't set one foot inside Iraq and her Ireland visit consisted of a re-fueling stop where she never left the airport. The pattern is becoming very clear here -- this woman plays very loose with the "facts".
She said she never pressured Commissioner Monegan to fire Trooper Wooten -- until recordings surfaced that showed that her staff had done exactly that. [That's why she's under investigation in Alaska -- abuse of power]
She still claims she said "Thanks, but no thanks" on the "bridge to nowhere" even though she supported the bridge when she ran for Governor and still kept the money after the bridge became politically untenable.
She told a great story at the RNC about putting the executive jet up for sale on eBay -- and told it so well everyone believed she had sold it there. Hell, she told it so well McCain thought she'd sold it for a profit. She didn't."
The biggest point is that the McCain campaign says Palin is about 'reform'. Yet she asked for over 150 million dollars in earmarks for the state of Alaska. That's more than any other state when averaged out per-person.
The McCain campaign continues to lie even when all news outlets have pointed out they are lying.
I'm in shock. I've never seen so many lies by any campaign. Obama may stretch the truth, but he doesn't outright lie!

[12 Sep 2008|06:07pm] |
This morning, it was a scene on “The View.”
With gender issues and campaign rhetoric reaching a near boil, McCain sat on the hot seat of the couch on this popular daytime talk show.
McCain laughed, not flinched, when co-host Joy Behar said off the bat, “I said to him before that I believe that after -- if he's elected, he will go back to the old John McCain that he used to be unless the Republican base has him by the short hairs."
And the questions only grew more heated. Despite the fact that McCain has been a regular on the morning show circuit for years, and loves to engage with angry town hall-ers, it was from this gang of women -- including a movie star and stand-up comedian -- that McCain faced some of his fiercest questioning of this campaign season.
On the topic of Palin, Barbara Walters asked, “What is she going to reform, specifically, senator?”
McCain replied, “First of all, earmark spending, which she vetoed a half a billion dollars worth in the state of Alaska.”
Walters said, “She also took some earmarks.”
McCain replied, “No. Not as governor, she didn't. She vetoed -- “ Walters interjected, “As mayor.”
(In fact, as the AP and others have noted, Palin requested nearly $200 million in earmarks this year alone, although that amount is down from previous years.)
McCain followed up with, “Uh, well, look, the fact is that she was a reform governor, she took on a Republican governor of her own -- incumbent governor of her own party and defeated him. She sold the airplane. She fired the chef.”
Walters then said, “She sold the airplane at a loss.”
McCain, amid audience laughter, said, “Well, you wanted her to keep it?”
Walters sighed and said, “No, I wanted her to at least get her money back.”
Then Joy Behar jumped in, confronting McCain about the controversial ads his campaign released this week. She said, “There are ads running from your campaign. One of them is saying that Obama, when he said, 'You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig' was talking about Sarah. There's another that says that Obama was interested in teaching sex education to kindergartners. Now we know that those two ads are untrue. They're lies. And yet, you at the end of it, say, 'I approved these messages.' Did you really approve them?”
McCain disagreed with the angle of the question. “Actually, they're not lies. “
Walters then pushed McCain on his past use of the lipstick and pigs expression, but he conveyed that it was apples and oranges because he was talking “about a health care plan.” Walters then countered, “Yeah, but he [Obama] talked about change. He wasn’t talking about Sarah Palin.”
McCain then said, “Sen. Obama chooses his words very carefully. OK? He shouldn't have said it. He shouldn't have said it. He chooses his words very carefully. And this is a tough campaign, but I would be glad to come on this show with Sen. Obama. I have asked Sen. Obama to join me in town hall meetings all across America.
Behar added, “That would be good for Sarah and Joe Biden, too.”
McCain answered, “That would be -- yes. Sure, the top of ticket leads, and if we had done what I asked Sen. Obama to do, because I've been in a lot of other campaigns where I have appeared with the opposition, in front of the people and listening to their hopes and dreams and aspirations. I don't you'd see the tenor of this campaign.
The issue ended when Walters said, “You bring us Sarah Palin, we'll ask Barack Obama.”
After commercial, the conversation shifted to abortion. When asked about the issue, McCain said, “I believe Roe v. Wade was a very bad decision.”And the predominantly female audience groaned. He continued, “I think it was a very bad decision, but I've thought that other decisions of the United States Supreme Court were bad decisions.”
Later, when his wife Cindy joined him on the couch, she too, was pressed on the issue. She said, “Well, I'm pro-life. I always have been.” Walters asked if that sentiment excepted rape and incest, Cindy answered, “Yes. My husband and I agree on this issue.”
The McCains were then pressed on their real estate holdings. Walters asked, “How many houses do you have?”
Cindy replied, “You know something, that's not part of this campaign. we're fortunate to come from a family, in particular, my dad and my mom who worked very hard to give me the best they could. and we are fortunate to be able to live a good life and to share and give to other people who are not as fortunate.”
Source:http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archi...2/1386847.aspx |
McCain also said he wants to appoint Supreme Court judges who interpret the constitution like our founding fathers did. To which Whoopi responded, "Am I going to have to worry about slavery?" and said that the constitution did need to change from what our founding fathers thought. McCain agreed.
McCain and Cindy said they disagree with Palin on abortion.
I'm glad they pressed on in his lying ads and what Sarah Palin will actually do to reform government.

Many Democrats are brushing the recent poll numbers aside, saying we have many more weeks to come and that this is simply a result of the "convention bounce".
I'm not so optimistic. The Republican brand is so unpopular that John McCain should not be ahead, no matter what. Sarah Palin may have energized the Republicans, but only those who would have voted Republican anyway.
Here's the problem that I think is going on:
Bill Clinton won because he responded to attacks and went on the offense. John Kerry lost because he didn't respond to attacks or go on the offense. Obama is doing a mix of both.
Obama went on the offense during his convention speech, which resulted in a bounce. Where is that Obama now?
Here is an example of going on the offense and responding to an attack: Community organizers, people the Republicans aren't too fond of, are the people who actually help struggling American citizens find jobs -- something the Republicans can't seem to do looking at the recent unemployment numbers.
^That's staying of the issues, responding to an attack, and going on the offense. . One of the reasons Obama beat Hillary Clinton is because Democrats prefer a 'nicer' candidate who isn't as 'blunt'. Well now he's in the general election. He's got us nice Democrats. Now he needs to play by the rules of the Republican Party to win over Independents and undecided voters.
The United States as a whole will vote for a candidate who runs a campaign like Hillary did in the primaries and Bill did in 1992 and 1996. They won't vote for a candidate who ran a campaign like Obama did during the primaries.
Make some changes in your campaign of change and take notes when you and Bill meet this week.

Some will say this is a smear, but it seems like an honest opinion to me.
This is a letter on Sarah Palin, written by a resident of Wasilla, Alaska named Anne Kilkenny.
Verified at: http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/kilkenny.asp
Quote: What follows is an open letter written by a resident of Wasilla, Alaska named Anne Kilkenny.
I am a resident of Wasilla, Alaska. I have known Sarah since 1992. Everyone here knows Sarah, so it is nothing special to say we are on a first-name basis. Our children have attended the same schools. Her father was my child’s favorite substitute teacher. I also am on a first name basis with her parents and mother-in-law. I attended more City Council meetings during her administration than about 99% of the residents of the city.
She is enormously popular; in every way she’s like the most popular girl in middle school. Even men who think she is a poor choice and won’t vote for her can’t quit smiling when talking about her because she is a “babe”.
It is astonishing and almost scary how well she can keep a secret. She kept her most recent pregnancy a secret from her children and parents for seven months. She is “pro-life”. She recently gave birth to a Down’s syndrome baby. There is no cover-up involved, here; Trig is her baby. She is energetic and hardworking. She regularly worked out at the gym.
She is savvy. She doesn’t take positions; she just “puts things out there” and if they prove to be popular, then she takes credit. Her husband works a union job on the North Slope for BP and is a champion snowmobile racer. Todd Palin’s kind of job is highly sought-after because of the schedule and high pay. He arranges his work schedule so he can fish for salmon in Bristol Bay for a month or so in summer, but by no stretch of the imagination is fishing their major source of income. Nor has her life-style ever been anything like that of native Alaskans. Sarah and her whole family are avid hunters. She’s smart.
Her experience is as mayor of a city with a population of about 5,000 (at the time), and less than 2 years as governor of a state with about 670,000 residents.During her mayoral administration most of the actual work of running this small city was turned over to an administrator. She had been pushed to hire this administrator by party power-brokers after she had gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous firings which had given rise to a recall campaign.
Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a “fiscal conservative”. During her 6 years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over 33%.During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the City increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation (1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they benefited residents.
The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral administration weren’t enough to fund everything on her wish list though, borrowed money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it with indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said she supported? The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? or a new library? No. $1m for a park.$15m-plus for construction of a multi-use sports complex which she rushed through to build on a piece of property that the City didn’t even have clear title to, that was still in litigation 7 yrs later–to the delight of the lawyers involved! The sports complex itself is a nice addition to the community but a huge money pit, not the profit-generator she claimed it would be. She also supported bonds for $5.5m for road projects that could have been done in 5-7 yrs without any borrowing.
While Mayor, City Hall was extensively remodeled and her office redecorated more than once. These are small numbers, but Wasilla is a very small city. As an oil producer, the high price of oil has created a budget surplus in Alaska. Rather than invest this surplus in technology that will make us energy independent and increase efficiency, as Governor she proposed distribution of this surplus to every individual in the state.
In this time of record state revenues and budget surpluses, she recommended that the state borrow/bond for road projects, even while she proposed distribution of surplus state revenues: spend today’s surplus, borrow for needs.
She’s not very tolerant of divergent opinions or open to outside ideasor compromise. As Mayor, she fought ideas that weren’t generated by her or her staff. Ideas weren’t evaluated on their merits, but on the basis of who proposed them.
While Sarah was Mayor of Wasilla she tried to fire our highly respected City Librarian because the Librarian refused to consider removing from the library some books that Sarah wanted removed. City residents rallied to the defense of the City Librarian and against Palin’s attempt at out-and-out censorship, so Palin backed down and withdrew her termination letter. People who fought her attempt to oust the Librarian are on her enemies list to this day.
Sarah complained about the “old boy’s club” when she first ran for Mayor, so what did she bring Wasilla? A new set of “old boys”. Palin fired most of the experienced staff she inherited. At the City and as Governor she hired or elevated new, inexperienced, obscure people, creating a staff totally dependent on her for their jobs and eternally grateful and fiercely loyal–loyal to the point of abusing their power to further her personal agenda, as she has acknowledged happened in the case of pressuring the State’s top cop (see below).
As Mayor, Sarah fired Wasilla’s Police Chief because he “intimidated” her, she told the press. As Governor, her recent firing of Alaska’s top cop has the ring of familiarity about it. He served at her pleasure and she had every legal right to fire him, but it’s pretty clear that an important factor in her decision to fire him was because he wouldn’t fire her sister’s ex-husband, a State Trooper. Under investigation for abuse of power, she has had to admit that more than 2 dozen contacts were made between her staff and family to the person that she later fired, pressuring him to fire her ex-brother-in-law. She tried to replace the man she fired with a man who she knew had been reprimanded for sexual harassment; when this caused a public furor, she withdrew her support.
She has bitten the hand of every person who extended theirs to her in help. The City Council person who personally escorted her around town introducing her to voters when she first ran for Wasilla City Council became one of her first targets when she was later elected Mayor. She abruptly fired her loyal City Administrator; even people who didn’t like the guy were stunned by this ruthlessness.
Fear of retribution has kept all of these people from saying anything publicly about her.
When then-Governor Murkowski was handing out political plums, Sarah got the best, Chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission: one of the few jobs not in Juneau and one of the best paid. She had no background in oil & gas issues. Within months of scoring this great job which paid $122,400/yr, she was complaining in the press about the high salary. I was told that she hated that job: the commute, the structured hours, the work. Sarah became aware that a member of this Commission (who was also the State Chair of the Republican Party) engaged in unethical behavior on the job.
In a gutsy move which some undoubtedly cautioned her could be political suicide, Sarah solved all her problems in one fell swoop: got out of the job she hated and garnered gobs of media attention as the patron saint of ethics and as a gutsy fighter against the “old boys’ club” when she dramatically quit, exposing this man’s ethics violations (for which he was fined).
As Mayor, she had her hand stuck out as far as anyone for pork from Senator Ted Stevens. Lately, she has castigated his pork-barrel politics and publicly humiliated him. She only opposed the “bridge to nowhere” after it became clear that it would be unwise not to.
As Governor, she gave the Legislature no direction and budget guidelines, then made a big grandstand display of line-item vetoing projects, calling them pork. Public outcry and further legislative action restored most of these projects–which had been vetoed simply because she was not aware of their importance–but with the unobservant she had gained a reputation as “anti-pork”.
She is solidly Republican: no political maverick. The State party leaders hate her because she has bit them in the back and humiliated them. Other members of the party object to her self-description as a fiscal conservative.
Around Wasilla there are people who went to high school with Sarah.
They call her “Sarah Barracuda” because of her unbridled ambition and predatory ruthlessness. Before she became so powerful, very ugly stories circulated around town about shenanigans she pulled to be made point guard on the high school basketball team. When Sarah’s mother-in-law, a highly respected member of the community and experienced manager, ran for Mayor, Sarah refused to endorse her.
As Governor, she stepped outside of the box and put together of package of legislation known as “AGIA” that forced the oil companies to march to the beat of her drum.
Like most Alaskans, she favors drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. She has questioned if the loss of sea ice is linked toglobal warming. She campaigned “as a private citizen” against a state initiaitive that would have either a) protected salmon streams from pollution from mines, or b) tied up in the courts all mining in the state (depending on who you listen to). She has pushed the State’s lawsuit against the Dept. of the Interior’s decision to list polar bears as threatened species.
McCain is the oldest person to ever run for President; Sarah will be a heartbeat away from being President. There has to be literally millions of Americans who are more knowledgeable and experienced than she. However, there’s a lot of people who have underestimated her and are regretting it.
CLAIM VS FACT
•“Hockey mom”: true for a few years •“PTA mom”: true years ago when her first-born was in elementary school, not since •“NRA supporter”: absolutely true •social conservative: mixed. Opposes gay marriage, BUT vetoed a bill that would have denied benefits to employees in same-sex relationships (said she did this because it was unconsitutional). •pro-creationism: mixed. Supports it, BUT did nothing as Governor to promote it. •“Pro-life”: mixed. Knowingly gave birth to a Down’s syndrome baby BUT declined to call a special legislative session on some pro-life legislation •“Experienced”: Some high schools have more students than Wasilla has residents. Many cities have more residents than the state of Alaska. No legislative experience other than City Council. Little hands-on supervisory or managerial experience; needed help of a city administrator to run town of about 5,000. •political maverick: not at all •gutsy: absolutely! •open & transparent: ??? Good at keeping secrets. Not good at explaining actions. •has a developed philosophy of public policy: no •”a Greenie”: no. Turned Wasilla into a wasteland of big box stores and disconnected parking lots. Is pro-drilling off-shore and in ANWR. •fiscal conservative: not by my definition! •pro-infrastructure: No. Promoted a sports complex and park in a city without a sewage treatment plant or storm drainage system. Built streets to early 20th century standards. •pro-tax relief: Lowered taxes for businesses, increased tax burden on residents •pro-small government: No. Oversaw greatest expansion of city government in Wasilla’s history. •pro-labor/pro-union. No. Just because her husband works union doesn’t make her pro-labor. I have seen nothing to support any claim that she is pro-labor/pro-union.
WHY AM I WRITING THIS?
First, I have long believed in the importance of being an informed voter. I am a voter registrar. For 10 years I put on student voting programs in the schools. If you google my name (Anne Kilkenny + Alaska), you will find references to my participation in local government, education, and PTA/parent organizations.
Secondly, I’ve always operated in the belief that “Bad things happen when good people stay silent”. Few people know as much as I do because few have gone to as many City Council meetings.
Third, I am just a housewife. I don’t have a job she can bump me out of. I don’t belong to any organization that she can hurt. But, I am no fool; she is immensely popular here, and it is likely that this will cost me somehow in the future: that’s life.
Fourth, she has hated me since back in 1996, when I was one of the 100 or so people who rallied to support the City Librarian against Sarah’s attempt at censorship.
Fifth, I looked around and realized that everybody else was afraid to say anything because they were somehow vulnerable.
CAVEATS
I am not a statistician. I developed the numbers for the increase in spending & taxation 2 years ago (when Palin was running for Governor) from information supplied to me by the Finance Director of the City of Wasilla, and I can’t recall exactly what I adjusted for: did I adjust for inflation? for population increases? Right now, it is impossible for a private person to get any info out of City Hall–they are swamped. So I can’t verify my numbers.
You may have noticed that there are various numbers circulating for the population of Wasilla, ranging from my “about 5,000″, up to 9,000. The day Palin’s selection was announced a city official told me that the current population is about 7,000. The official 2000 census count was 5,460. I have used about 5,000 because Palin was Mayor from 1996 to 2002, and the city was growing rapidly in the mid-90’s. |
Great information. Needs to be forwarded everywhere.

The Republican Convention is over.
The Republicans spent the last 3 days degrading, belittling and mocking the accomplishments of Senator Obama. They offered no ways to fix health care, create jobs, improve education or do anything but continue the failed policies of the last 8 years. Oh wait -- I forgot! They offered us a position on oil, "Drill Baby Drill". How thoughtful.
When they weren't mocking Obama with a sarcastic tongue --which reminds me of the Bush smear tactics-- they inspired fear. They told us the Republicans are the party who loves the USA and that the Democrats will not keep us safe. Which message do you prefer, hope or fear? I'll go with hope for a change.
They continued to lie about Senator Obama's record. They said he has no 'real accomplishments'. Here are a few: 1. Obama helped reform the death penalty in Illinois 2. Obama helped pass bipartisan legislation in Illinois that gave health care coverage to 154,000 citizens, 70,000 of which were children 3. Through bipartisan efforts Obama helped pass the Earned Income Tax Credit, giving over 100 million in tax-cuts to families across Illinois 4. Being a member of the Veterans Affairs Committee, Obama fought to help Illinois veterans receive disability pay 5. Obama played a critical role in passing the strongest Ethics legislation that has emerged from the US Congress.
They also said Obama will raise taxes, when in reality he would cut taxes for over 90% of Americans. Do Republicans love to lie?
The Republicans praised John McCain for being a maverick, putting his country first, having experience and being a solider. Well I've got news for you, America needs more than a solider. Furthermore, if he was a 'maverick' why did he pick a vice presidential candidate that rallies to the Republican base? If he puts his country first, why did he pick an inexperienced vice presidential candidate, who could potentially become President considering McCain's history of cancer and age? I'll tell you why: McCain picked who he thought would win him votes, not what would be best for our country.
Granted, McCain does have experience -- voting with George Bush 90% of the time. Experience doesn't count if it's on the wrong side of the issues.
Instead of experience, let's focus on judgement. Obama had the good judgement to oppose the Iraq War from the beginning, to push for a withdrawal of our troops (which is now, finally, echoed by the Bush Administration) and by his insistence to focus on Afghanistan, where the true threats to our nation reside. The only good judgment McCain has is on the troop surge. But that issue would not have been an issue if Obama had been commander-in-chief and not gone to Iraq in the first place. Good judgement from our commander-in-chief, from day one, is what we need for our country and that is exactly what Obama offers and McCain doesn't.
Now lets get to 20-month Governor, Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin who has even less experience than Barack Obama and Joe Biden. She preaches family values and abstinence-only education, but has a pregnant daughter. She slashed funding by more than 50% for special needs children in Alaska, but says those with special needs will have a friend in the White House. She left the town she was mayor 20 million dollars in debt. She is against abortion (ie: against women) and is under investigation for abuse of power. Yet she has the audacity to belittle and mock Obama being a community organizer early in his life. She's a sarcastic, condescending, belittling, joke. Simple as that.
Republicans can blame the media for 'unfair' treatment of Sarah Pailn, but that's a scapegoat. The media is just doing their job. Republicans, including Sarah Palin, told Hillary Clinton to stop "whining" about the media being "sexist". They said if she can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. I guess they want it both ways!
The bottom line is, you have solutions or smears. You have hope or fear. You have more of the same or change.

Quotes Karl Rove as saying he is impressed with Sarah Palin being mayor of the second biggest town in Alaska. Quotes Karl Rove as mocking Tim Kaine, who was an option for Obama's VP pick, as not being mayor of a big enough town and that it would be a purely political choice that shows Obama is not concerned first and foremost with the person best capable of being President of the United States.
Quotes Bill O saying teen pregnancy is a private matter that should not be judged in the case of Sarah Palin. Quotes Bill O saying the pregnancy of Jamie Lynn Spears is the fault of the parents and that they don't have control over their daughter.
Quotes Fox News Dick Morris as saying the sexism in society is so deep because of the attacks on Sarah Palin. Then shows him saying this about Hillary Clinton: "What happens when the boys in the Middle East or the boys who run Russia start picking on ya?" "This is what Hillary always does when she's under fire, she's retreats behind the apron strings."
Then at the end it shows Sarah Palin saying this about sexism and Hillary Clinton: "You've got to know what you're getting into....any kind of perceived whine about that excess criticism or a sharper microscope put on her...I think, man, that doesn't do us any good, women in politics, women in general, wanting to progress this country. I mean work harder, prove yourself to an even greater degree that you are capable...that you're going to be the best candidate."

McCain's VP pick....
John McCain is using this woman for political gain and as a gimmick to win over women and the religious right. I find that DISGUSTING and extremely OFFENSIVE.
Just a few years ago this woman was a soccer mom and a mayor! If McCain truly values "experience" and feels Obama is "not ready to lead" why would he put, as his number two, a woman with virtually zero experience?
Joe Biden, is without question, qualfied to lead our country and will give Obama all the experience he needs in any area where he may lack. Obama, unlike McCain, picked the best candidate as his number two. Obama put our country before him and his political career -- unlike McCain.
The bottom line is, John McCain is using this woman for political gain. He's willing to put our country in jeopardy to try and win a campaign where he promises 4 more years of the last 8, failed years.

What I think about Obama's VP pick:
People complain about Obama's lack of experience, particularly on foreign policy. Now you have someone behind Obama with plenty of experience, especially on foreign policy.
People will say this isn't change because Obama has picked a Washington insider -- but I still think it is. The policies these men stand for are change from the last 8 horrible years and will still take our nation in a completely new and progressive direction.
People will say Biden has attacked Obama many times. But this was when they were both vying for the Democratic nomination. So my response is: so what? Bush senior attacked Regan, but was then chosen as Regan's VP. This is common and typical. Former rivals who trash each other join together once the nominee is chosen. Furthermore, Biden has repeatedly said he now feels Obama is up to being president. I'm certain he feels this way even more now that he will be looking over Obama's shoulder.
Joe Biden is the perfect running-mate who can go after the Republicans and hit them where it hurts. He's the perfect guy to respond to their attacks forcefully and articulately. Obama hasn't been that great with responding to the Republican smears, so getting Biden thrown into the mix is a great help for Obama. He'll be a lightening rod on the campaign trail! Biden also has enough credibility to attack McCain -- his responses will have to be taken seriously.
Overall, I'm 100% pleased with this choice and I'm completely reenergized.
